Town of Hillsboro, Virginia, Receives Fiber to the Home

Dec 16, 2021

LOUDOUN, VA, Dec. 16, 2021 – Express Technologies, a telecommunication company based in Fredericksburg, VA, is placing fiber to the home in the town of Hillsboro, Virginia, through internet service provider KGI Communications, LLC.

The town-owned fiber is being installed in a Hillsboro-owned fiber optic conduit system built as part of the Town of Hillsboro $34-million traffic-calming and infrastructure project, ReThink9, that included burial of all overhead utilities alongside new drinking water, wastewater and stormwater systems.

KGI will be able to provide up to 1 Gbps of service to all residential and commercial clients upon the completion of the project by the end of this year.

“From the start of the design of this project, we were committed to putting the infrastructure in place that would be transformational and serve this 18th-century Town with the very latest 21st-century technology,” Roger Vance, Hillsboro Mayor and ReThink9 project manager, said Wednesday. “Thanks to our partners Express-Tek and KGI, we’ve achieved—faster than we ever expected—our goal for fiber to the home that will deliver unrivaled high-speed broadband in rural Loudoun County.”

Vance said the current service in Hillsboro is primarily wireless, relatively low-speed and vulnerable to weather conditions and the Town’s location nestled in a narrow gap of the Short Hill Mountain.

OSP Project Manager, Keith Ward, ensured the placement of the main fiber through provision of the original design that will serve the 55 residential and commercial properties within the town’s limits. Forty units were completed December 7, with continuity back to the town’s main fiber hub location.

KGI completed the circuit turn up from SEGRA on December 15, enabling them to begin the installs to the Hillsboro customers who want to connect to the new fiber system. Express-Tek is hoping to complete the main line fiber closures to service the rest of the customers by the end of this week.

“We knew fiber was the only solution and when we determined that installing the fiber ourselves would accelerate delivery of service to Town, we learned from others in the industry about the quality and integrity of Express-Tek,” Vance said. “Their rapid deployment and installation—and extraordinary collaboration with the Town and KGI—has been truly impressive.”

“We are proud to be working with Express-Tek,” Juan Marte, CEO of KGI Communications, said. “Through this partnership we will be able to provide Hillsboro reliable internet services at a reasonable cost for all residents and commercial businesses.”
